WHO is the instructor?
Mr.
Patrick Graham has been teaching marketing, management,
and entrepreneurship in the Saginaw area for over
ten years. His educational background includes
a Bachelor's Degree from Eastern New Mexico University,
with a double major in Marketing and Finance and
a minor in Management; and a Master's Degree from
Eastern Michigan University in Marketing Education.
He is an adjunct professor at Eastern Michigan
University instructing graduate courses in Methods
of Teaching Marketing, and Methods of Teaching
Entrepreneurship. He is currently authoring a
new high school textbook in Entrepreneurship and
is an entrepreneur himself! He invests in real
estate, selling over the Internet, and is even
involved in the production of hardwood lumber.
He's worked in management in various industries,
and maintains close contact with leaders in the
marketing field. His energy level, devotion to
the profession of teaching marketing and management,
and his real concern for his students make him
a vital link between students and their business
career.
WHAT special clubs or student organizations
is the program involved with?
DECA is a co-curricular,
student-centered organization specifically designed
to provide activities that will motivate high
school and college students to learn marketing,
management and entrepreneurial competencies that
will prepare them to become skilled, employable
workers in the field of marketing and management.
DECA-As an integral part of marketing education,
DECA enhances the training of students with interests
in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship.
It promotes competency-based, competitive marketing
events and achievement/recognition activities
at the local, state, and national levels.
Saginaw Career Complex DECA is recognized as having
one of the most enthusiastic and activity based
chapters in Michigan. With a history of having
state officers and a nationally recognized advisor,
Saginaw Career Complex DECA members have an edge
on their peers.
WHICH
students participated in competitions, which allowed
them to demonstrate their expertise in marketing
and entrepreneurship, and were recognized as outstanding
students?
MEET
THE WINNERS:
 
Philippe
and Patrick, juniors enrolled in the Marketing
and Entrepreneurship program at the Saginaw
Career Complex , demonstrated their proficiency
in skills identified by occupational practitioners
as essential to success in the District DECA Competitions.
During
competition, Philippe and Patrick, also students
at Nouvel Catholic Central High School, participated
in the Vehicles and Petroleum Marketing Series
Event. As participants in this event, Philippe
and Patrick had to accomplish a task by translating
what they have learned into effective, efficient
and spontaneous action. In addition to being
evaluated on performance indicators validated
by industry representatives, they were also evaluated
on their understanding of communication skills,
analytical skills, critical thinking/problem-solving
skills, production skills, and their ability to
prioritize and manage time wisely. Philippe
and Patrick were able to pull it all together
and walked away as winners.

Emma
and Shavein, two successful seniors in the Marketing
and Entrepreneurship program at the
Saginaw Career Complex , are
deserving recipients of the National Marketing
Education Honor Award. This award highlights
and recognizes marketing education students for
their exemplary achievement in academic excellence,
leadership skills, involvement in DECA, and community
and school service.
In
order to receive this honor, Emma, also a student
at Heritage High, and Shavein, a SASA student,
have met the following criteria: participation
in DECA at the national level; achievement of
senior status; attainment of an overall cumulative
grade point average of at least 3.2 for the seven
previous semesters; and participation in at least
three of the areas listed under DECA activities,
leadership and involvement in DECA.
Congratulations
to both young ladies for this outstanding achievement!
 
Shavein
and Emma, two seniors enrolled in the Marketing
and Entrepreneurship program at the
Saginaw Career Complex , united
to participate in the District DECA Leadership
Conference, while Melissa and Brandi, two other
students in the same program, united to form another
team and participated in the same conference.
As
participants in the Business Law and Ethics Management
Team Decision Making Event, Shavein, a student
at SASA; Emma, a Heritage High student; and Melissa
and Brandi, both students at Freeland High; demonstrated
the ability to analyze one or a combination of
elements essential to the effective operation
of a business, which included contracts, product
liability, employment, and types of business ownership.
In addition, social values that could be argued
from various vantage points were evaluated too.
The students also demonstrated their understanding
of the importance of communication skills, analytical
skills, critical thinking skills, problem-solving
skills, production skills, teamwork, and time
management and walked away as winners.

WHAT
certifications can I achieve or work toward in
the Marketing andEntrepreneurhsip program?
Students
may earn a Marketable Skills Certificate.
The marketable skills certification process provides
students with the opportunity to demonstrate,
document, and defend their achievement of employer
validated standards and competencies. Achievement
of the marketable skills certification should
improve the likelihood of success in future employment
and/or a continuing educational program.
