WHAT
is the Hospitality and Food Service program?
The
Hospitality and Food Service Program is a two-year
course that will provide transferable skills and
technical experiences to meet the needs of the
growing Hospitality and Food Service industry.
Valuable experience is gained through the student
operated restaurant.
WHY should I take the Hospitality and Food Service
program?
Classes at the Saginaw Career Complex are different
than those offered at your home high school. You
learn by doing - not just reading, listening,
and memorizing. And you learn out in the real
world, on-the-job, with real people.
The Hospitality and Food Service Program is part
of the Business Service Technology career major.
Students will learn in both, school-based and
work-based settings.
You will also earn a competency certificate in
Hospitality and Food Service from the Saginaw
Career Complex, which says you've learned actual
job skills at high standards set by business and
industry. Your parents will love it, so will colleges
and employers.

WHAT will I learn in the Hospitality and Food
Service program?
You will learn about:
Travel and Tourism
Food service and preparation
Lodging
Customer service
Safety and sanitation
Math
Communication skills
Teamwork
Decision-making
Employability skills
You will learn and apply these principles in
a state of the art culinary lab. In addition,
you will receive training in the travel, tourism,
and lodging industry. You will also learn and
practice skills in real work environments.

WHAT are my job prospects?
Employment of restaurant and food service managers
is expected to increase for all related occupations
through 2008. In addition to employment growth,
the need to replace managers who transfer to other
occupations or stop working will create many job
openings. Opportunities to fill these openings
are expected to be best for those with a bachelor's
or associate degree in restaurant and institutional
food service management.
WHERE can I go after completing the program?
Your training in the Hospitality and Food
Service program gives you several exciting options:
Entry-level employment - Students might
begin careers at restaurants, resorts, and other
service-oriented facilities.
Continued Education - Students
have the opportunity to continue their education
with the advantage of articulating college credits
at the same time they are earning their high
school diploma, and they don't have to pay for
it! After successfully completing the program,
students may articulate credits at Ferris State
University. The articulation process will give
students a head start on their post-secondary
education, as well as save them a considerable
sum of money. In addition, students are also
ready to enter industry/employer-sponsored training
programs.
WHO
is the teacher?
Julie Ivan combines her dedication and energy
(just like the energizer bunny, she keeps going
and going and going) with her formal training
to teach students about the food and hospitality
industry. She has a Bachelor's Degree from Central
Michigan University with concentration in Home
Economics and Food Management. Ms. Ivan teaches
her students to operate a restaurant, which is
open to the public four days each week.
