WHAT is the Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair program?

The Saginaw Career Complex  and AIS Construction Equipment, one of the area's premier heavy equipment suppliers, have joined forces to offer a program that will give students a way to get some of the best heavy equipment operator and repair training in the state.  In this practical, hands-on program, students will receive the necessary know-how to safely and efficiently operate and maintain large equipment.  This two-year program is offered off of the Saginaw Career Complex campus at the AIS Construction Training Facility in Bridgeport.

WHY should I take Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair ?

If you have always had an interest in vehicles, but on a big scale, you can get the technical expertise you need to step into the world of heavy equipment operation and repair in this two-year program.  Students learn on real vehicles--not scaled down models.  There is a need for individuals with skills in this high paying industry, so step up to the plate and begin your future now.

Classes through the Saginaw Career Complex are different than those offered at your home high school. You learn by doing—not just reading, listening, and memorizing. And you learn out in the real world, on-the-job, with real people.

You will also earn a competency certificate in Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair from the Saginaw Career Complex, which says you've learned actual job skills at high standards set by business and industry. Your parents will love it, so will colleges and employers.

WHAT will I learn in the Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair program?

You will develop knowledge and skills in:

• Basic Electronics
• Basic Hydraulics
• Basic Enginess
• Construction Equipment Operation

• Diesel Fuel Sytems

• Fundamentals of Mechanics

• Applied Electronics

You will learn these skills in a clean, well-equipped, up-to-date heavy equipment operation/repair training site. You will also learn and practice skills in real work environments.

WHAT are my job prospects?

The job prospects are very good for individuals with training in this area.  Construction, trucking, transportation and other employers who need expertise of heavy equipment operators are having a tough time locating qualified men and women to run their big equipment.  To address this need, the Saginaw Career Complex and the AIS Construction Equipment company are offering a program to interested students that will help launch a rewarding career in the field of Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair.

WHERE can I go after completing the program?

Your training in the Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair program gives you several exciting options:

Entry-level employment - High school graduates might be employed as laborers in construction, mechanic helpers, and entry level operators using heavy equipment.
Continued Education -Students might continue their education at the college level in a Heavy Equipment Technology program, which emphasizes heavy equipment service for the agricultural, construction, forestry, trucking and auxilary industries.  Students might begin post-secondary education in a program where they can earn an Associates degree.  Further studies in the Heavy Equipment  Service Engineering Technology program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and may lead to higher paying positions.  After post-secondary training individuals might become technicians, operators, site supervisors, or service managers.

WHAT are the admission requirements?

Students admitted to the Heavy Equipment Operation/Repair program at the Saginaw Career Complex must:

• Have an interest in working with heavy equipment
• Be a high school junior or senior
• Be on track for high school graduation
• Have good attendance habits
• Be willing to attend classes at the AIS Construction Company Training Facility, located in Bridgeport, MI, for half the school day and participate in work-based learning experiences

WHAT does it cost?

Nothing! Eligible high school students may attend free of charge.
