WHAT is the Electricity program?

The
Electricity program provides hands-on training
in the application of skills needed in the electrical
industry, for construction, maintenance, manufacturing,
and sales of electrical equipment. Through equipment
and tool identification, students learn practical
application, as well as electrical theory, necessary
for employment or college and technical school.
WHY should I take the Electricity Program?
Classes at the Saginaw Career Complex are different
than those offered at your home high school. You
learn by doingnot just reading, listening,
and memorizing. And you learn out in the real
world, on-the-job, with real people.

In the
Electricity program, at the Saginaw Career Complex,
students will survey the electrical industry,
and complete an in-depth study. This two-year
program covers residential, commercial, and industrial
requirements for the industry. After students
study residential, commercial, and industrial
areas, they then concentrate in one area. Students
develop a career industry study, and an employment
portfolio. Students learn to apply math and theory
in real world applications.
WHAT will I learn in the Electricity program?
You
will learn:
AC/DC theory
Motor theory and motor control circuits
Residential branch circuits
Installing conduit systems
Electrical math and algebra
National electrical code
Basic math
Verbal and non-verbal communication
skills
Technical manuals or drawings
Project based learning with documentation
using technical writing
Technical reading
Employability skills
Teamwork in electrical projects
Good work habits

WHAT are my job prospects?

Job
opportunities for skilled electricians are expected
to be good as the growth in demand outpaces the
supply of workers trained in this craft. There
is expected to be a shortage of skilled workers
during the next decade because of the anticipated
smaller pool of young workers entering training
programs.
WHERE
can I go after completing the program?
Your training in the Electricity program gives
you several exciting options:
Entry-level employment -Students might
begin their electrifying careers with an independent
contractor or residential electrician.
Continued Education - Students
can continue their education with the advantage
of articulating college credits at the same
time they are earning their high school diploma,
and they don't have to pay for it! After successfully
completing the program, students may articulate
credits at Delta College and Ferris State University.
The articulation process will give students
a head start on their post-secondary education,
as well as save them a considerable sum of money.
In addition, students are also ready to enter
industry/employer-sponsored training programs.
WHO is the teacher?
Mr.
Carl Peil, a master electrician and electrical
contractor, began his teaching career at the Saginaw
Career Complex in 1973. As a journeyperson electrician,
licensed in the state of Michigan, Peil has a
great deal of information to share with his students
at the Complex and at Delta College, where he
also teaches such classes as: master/journeyperson
test prep and code update, motor control, motor
theory, grounding, national electrical code, electrical
math, and electrical theory. Mr. Peil has extensive,
formal training, in the areas of electricity and
education. He was one of a very few individuals
selected as a Graduate Fellow from the U.S. Department
of Education, with a concentration in Educational
Theory. In addition, he has earned a Bachelor's
Degree from Central Michigan University, with
a major in Industrial Technology and a minor in
Speech, and a Master's Degree in Education from
Saginaw Valley State University. Mr. Peil continues
to strive for excellence as he attends many educational
workshops and training sessions. This is one electrician
that is sure to give you an electrifying jolt
if you are a student in his class!
