WHAT
is Advanced Medical Careers/Nursing?
The
Advance Medical Careers/Nursing program is designed
for students who have successfully completed the
first year Medical Careers or Nursing Occupations
program and are sincerely interested in pursuing
careers in Nursing and or the Allied Health Occupations.
Advance Medical Careers will provide students
advanced transferable skills and technical experience
that meet the standards of the health care industry
and prepare students to continue their education
in a post-secondary program and/or secure employment
in entry level Nursing or Allied Health occupations.
WHY should I take Advanced Medical Careers?
Classes at the Saginaw Career Complex are different
than those offered at your home high school. You
learn by doingnot just reading, listening,
and memorizing. And you learn out in the real
world, on-the-job, with real people.
Students
in the Advance Medical Career/Nursing program
select a particular area of interest and spend
three days a week at a health care facility, under
the guidance of a mentor. This gives the students
the benefit of working closely with someone with
special skills and knowledge in their chosen fields.
In addition, classroom instruction gives the students
practical knowledge before applying it to real
life experience, as well as an opportunity to
reflect on what they have learned during the week.
Students also have the opportunity to articulate
college credit (Medical Terminology).
WHAT will I learn in Advanced Medical Careers/Nursing?
Advanced
study in:
Medical terminology
Ethics and legal issues
Medical Math
Communications
Safety
EKG
Blood/Glucose testing
Surgical care
IV therapy
Health Unit Coordinator

WHAT are my job prospects?
Couldn't be better! As long as there are health
care facilities and people who need care, there
will be health occupations. Currently, seven out
of every 100 Americans work in health occupations.
By the year 2005, that figure will increase to
nine out of every 100. That's 3,900,000 new jobs!
WHERE can I go after completing the program?
Your training in Advanced Medical Careers/Nursing
gives you several exciting options:
Entry-level employment -Students might
begin at pharmacies, veterinary clinics, and
many other health care facilities
Continued Education - Students
can continue their education with the advantage
of articulating college credits at the same
time they are earning their high school diploma,
and they don't have to pay for it! After successfully
completing the program, students may articulate
credits at Delta College and Ferris State University.
The articulation process will give students
a head start on their post-secondary education,
as well as save them a considerable sum of money.
In addition, students are also ready to enter
industry/employer-sponsored training programs.
WHO
are the teachers?
Ms. Ileana Rivera brings an enormous
amount of experience and education to the classroom
in order to teach students, and to share with
them the skills and knowledge necessary to be
successful in a medical environment. As a registered
nurse for over thirty years, Ms. Rivera has had
nursing experiences in several different areas
of medicine including obstetrics, office nursing,
school nursing, intensive care unit, orthopedic
surgery, and geriatrics. Ms. Rivera actively uses
the teaching certification she received at Trenton
State College, in New Jersey, on a daily basis
at the Saginaw Career Complex.
Mrs.
Karen Stack makes science come alive with her
dynamic style of teaching and her exuberance,
unbounded energy, and terrific sense of humor.
She brings all of these attributes into the classroom/lab
as she teaches the articulated BIO 130 class within
the Advanced Medical Careers/Nursing curriculum.
Mrs. Stack is a highly qualified science instructor
in her 19th year of teaching--her previous teaching
experiences include positions at Arthur Hill High
School, Handley Elementary/Middle School, Webber
Middle School, and Nouvel Catholic Central High
School. Her previous teaching experiences,
along with her formal education (B.S. degree in
Biology/Chemistry and Teaching Certification
from Michigan State University, Master's of Arts
in Teaching with an emphasis on biology from SVSU),
provide just a part of the knowledge, talent,
and expertise that Mrs. Stack shares with her
students. She is one of those teachers who
students will remember for the rest of their lives!
