WHAT are WorkKeys Assessments?
WorkKeys is a workplace skills assessment system used
by employers, students, workers and educators across
the nation. The WorkKeys, developed by ACT, offers assessments
to measure current skill levels which help:
students and workers recognize their strengths
and weaknesses so they are able to increase their skill
levels in the academic, technical, and career preparation
areas,
educators tailor instructional programs to help
students acquire the skills employers need and want,
and
employers assess workers and customize training
for a wide range of skilled jobs.
WHAT areas do WorkKeys Assessments measure?
At the Saginaw Career Complex five WorkKeys Assessments
are administered. They measure skills in:
Applied Mathematics
Reading for Information
Writing
Locating Information
Teamwork
HOW are WorkKeys Assessments used at the Saginaw Career
Complex?
As a means of assessing the basic skills of entering
students, ACT WorkKeys tests are administered to entering
students. These tests are used, in part, to determine
a student's ability to be successful in their chosen
technical program and in a specific job or occupational
field. Once a student's skill levels have been determined,
instructors and support staff work with the student
to increase the skill levels in the academic areas and
to provide the student with the required skills to meet
the needs of employers in the real world.
WHY do employers use WorkKeys Assessments?
The Michigan Department of Career Development indicates
that companies who use the WorkKeys assessments to assess
new and current employees reap substantial benefits,
including:
Improved employee selection and advancement procedures
Reduced overtime
Reduced turnover
Increased productivity
Fewer legal challenges over hiring processes
Higher employee morale
WHY do students and job seekers use
WorkKeys Assessments?
The WorkKeys
assessments provide an objective credential, for students
and job seekers, which documents their abilities in
the skills employers are seeking. In addition, the State
of Michigan currently recognizes the WorkKeys assessment
as an alternative assessment, in part, for the Michigan
Merit Award. Students who qualify for the Michigan
Merit Award under Alternate B are eligible to receive
a $2,500 Michigan Merit Award to be used for technical
training at Michigan Universities, community colleges,
or proprietary schools.
