The Michigan Merit Award Public Act 94 of 1999 provides
for a merit-based program for high school seniors to
reward student achievement and to make post-secondary
education more affordable.
FACTS about the MICHIGAN MERIT AWARD program:
It is administered by the Michigan Merit Award
Board and is established within the Michigan Department
of Treasury.
It begins with the high school graduating class
of 2000.
Students must meet certain criteria to be eligible
for it.
It is worth $2,500 to eligible students.
It may be used at any post-secondary educational
institution approved by the Michigan Merit Award Board.
(Such institutions include public and independent traditional
4-year and 2-year colleges and universities, as well
as, a variety of vocational, technical and apprenticeship
programs).
It is available to all Michigan students
including public school, public school academy, nonpublic
school and home school students as long as all eligibility
requirements are met.
WHAT are the eligibility requirements?
Take MEAP High School Tests in mathematics,
reading, science, and writing and score at Level 1
(Exceeded Michigan Standards) or Level 2 (Met Michigan
Standards) on all four tests.
OR
Take MEAP High School Tests in mathematics,
reading, science, and writing and score at Level 1
or Level 2 on at least two of the tests and
also score at or above the 75th percentile, using
national norms, on the ACT (a composite score of 24)
or the SAT (a composite score of 1170). Please noteThe
qualifying composite scores on the ACT and SAT may
differ from year-to-year.
OR
Take MEAP High School Tests in mathematics,
reading, science, and writing and score at Level 1
or Level 2 on at least two of the tests and
also achieve qualifying scores on five ACT Work Keys
tests; Applied Mathematics (a score of 5), Reading
for Information (a score of 5), Writing (a score of
3), and Locating Information (a score of 6).
AND
Graduation from a Michigan high school or completion
of the GED. (Students who are residents of Michigan
and do not hold residency in any other state but attend
high school outside the State of Michigan are also
eligible.)
AND
Enrollment in an approved post-secondary educational
institution.
AND
No felony conviction involving an assault,
physical injury or death.

of the MICHIGAN MERIT AWARD at the Saginaw Career Complex?
Congratulations
to the many students who have recently passed the WorkKeys
Assessments at the Merit Scholarship Level. During
the 2003-04 school year 170 students, who attend the
Saginaw Career Complex for one-half of their school
day and represent 20 different home high schools, successfully
completed the the WorkKeys Assessments in the following
areas with the scores indicated below:
Applied
Mathematics - 5 or higher
Reading for Information - 5 or higher
Locating Information - 4 or higher
Writing - 3 or higher
