| All students attending
the Saginaw Career Complex have the opportunity to earn
a Marketable Skills Certificate and a Certificate of
Completion. In addition, students in various programs
at the Complex have the opportunity to earn/begin preparation
for other certifications that are significant to that
particular area of study.
WHAT is a
Marketable Skills Certificate, and WHY is it significant?
The marketable
skills certification process provides students with
the opportunity to demonstrate, document, and defend
their achievement of employer validated standards and
competencies. Achievement of the marketable skills certificate
should improve the likelihood of success in future employment
and/or a continuing education program.
A student
demonstrates marketable skills when he/she meets the
following criteria in a school year:
Demonstrates
SCANS competencies, as evaluated by the Work Keys
Assessments (teamwork, applied mathematics, effective
communications), at the level appropriate for entry
level employment in their occupational field
Demonstrates essential competencies to industry
standards or maintains a "3.0" or above
grade point average
Follows the Saginaw Career Complex Code of
Cooperation as evidenced by the fact that he/she received
no suspensions during the school year and received
"3's" or better in their citizenship records
Maintains a 95% attendance record in the program
(9 or less absences in a school year)
Demonstrates safe work habits
Graduates from high school
WHAT is a
Certificate of Completion?
A Certificate
of Completion indicates that a student has achieved
performance levels in his/her program that meet high
competency standards for that program.
A Certificate
of Completion stating the vocational technical area
of specialization of an individual student will be issued
to that student at the end of the training program if
the following criteria are met:
The
students maintains a "3.0" or above grade
point average in their Saginaw Career Complex Program
And / or
The student demonstrates essential competencies
to meet the standards of the instructor when the student
exits the program
WHAT
is a Personal Management and Employability Skills Certificate
and WHY is it important?
The
Personal Management and Employability Skills Certificate
may be earned through completion of a specialized curriculum,
which focuses on topics such as: Attendance, Preparation,
Communications (including Conflict Management), Responsibility,
and Follow Through. Students must complete the
curriculum and have 95% attendance to earn the certification.
The
inclusion of career certifications and the Personal
Managment and Employability Skills Certification in
the portfolio makes the portfolio more professional
and provides authentic evidence of soft skills that
employers seek.
WHAT other
certifications may a student earn/begin preparation
for at the Saginaw Career Complex?
- AYES
Certificate-Students have the opportunity to receive
an AYES Certificate which signifies quality education
in the automotive industry in a curriculum offered
by a school that is certified by the National Institute
for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). In addition,
students also have the opportunity to achieve state
certifications in the following areas: Brakes, Electrical,
Engine Performance, and Suspension & Steering.
- ASE
Certification-Since the Automotive Collision Repair
& Refinishing program is ASE (Automotive Service
Excellence) certified, the skills taught in the program
are relevant to the certification technicians in the
field take. Upon completion of the program at the
Complex, students may take any of the 4 certification
tests: Non-Structural Analysis, Structural Analysis,
Plastics & Adhesives, and Painting & Refinishing.
Upon related work experience they will be issued a
certificate.
- State
Builder's License-Students in the Building Construction
program may begin preparation to take the State Builder's
Licensing Examination. (Students need to be 18 years
old to take this examination.)
- Project
Lead the Way Certificate of Completion may be
achieved in the Pre-Engineering program.
- Cisco
Certified Network Associate (CCNA)-This certification
denotes a certain proficiency in installing, configuring
and operating LAN, routed WAN and switched LAN Cisco
networks. This certification is a prerequisite for
both the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
and the Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP)
status.
- Certified
Novell Administrator (CNA)-CNA's provide companies
direct support for software users in various work
environments including professional offices and small
businesses, work groups or departments, and corporate
information services.
- Network+
-Network+ Certification means that the candidate
possesses the knowledge needed to configure and operate
a variety of networking products. This exam covers
a wide range of vendor and product neutral networking
technologies that can also serve as a prerequisite
for vendor-specific IT certifications.
- A+
-The A+ Certification certifies the competency of
entry-level computer service technicians. A+ Certification
signifies that the certified individual possesses
the knowledge and skills essential for a successful
entry-level computer service technician, as defined
by experts from companies across the industry.
- Oracle
Certified Professional (OCP)-The OCP has been
developed by Oracle Corporation to recognize technical
professionals who can demonstrate the depth of knowledge
and hands-on skills required to support Oracle's core
products according to a standard of excellence established
by Oracle Corporation.
- Java
Certification-Java is a programming language that
is used for Internet development. Java capabilities
are also available in databases, such as Oracle. The
popularity of Java has increased the number of computer
certifications available for Java.
- Certified
Internet Webmaster Associate (CIW) —The
CIW Associate certification is ideal for all professionals
who use the Internet. This certification indicates
that an individual has mastered the fundamental knowledge
and skills required to work in an Internet technology-enabled
environment. These foundation skills include basic
knowledge of Internet technologies such as Web browsers,
FTP and e-mail; Web page authoring using Hypertext
Markup Language (HTML); and basic infrastructure networking.
The CIW Foundations exam validates the basic hands-on
skills and knowledge that a professional is expected
to understand and use.
- WOW
Certified Web Designer Associate (CWDSA) —The
CWDS Associate certification indicates that an individual
has a proficient level of understanding in the visual
arts and creating the images and designs that capture
and keep an audience interested. The certification
exam measures essential competencies and skill sets
identified as essential for Web technology workers.
An individual must demonstrate knowledge of Internet
basics, HTML and WYSIWYG editors, Web graphics, Web
multimedia, Web site design, Web site management,
and basic legal issues. The intent is to certify
individuals in a body of knowledge that is identified
and accepted as the baseline or foundation of any
Web Designer.
- Microsoft
Office User Specialist-Students have the opportunity
to take the Microsoft Office User Specialist exam
which proves to the world that they have the comprehensive
skills to drive a wide range of tasks to completion,
and to do it with the kind of efficiency that businesses
need and employers notice. Students may become certified
in the following areas: Microsoft Word, Microsoft
Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Access.
- Pesticide Applicators Certification--Students
may begin working toward this certification, which
is highly valued especially by those employed in the
environmental industry.
- ServSafe
Food Safety Certification-Students can work toward
the National Restaurant Association ServSafe Food
Safety Certification. This certification indicates
that individuals are acquainted with food safety and
sanitation principles.
- CENA-The
Nursing Occupations program provides an opportunity
for students to earn the State of Michigan Certified
Evaluated Nursing Assistant certification. To obtain
this certification a student must pass a knowledge
and clinical skills test administered by a State of
Michigan testing facility. A student must pass both
portions of this test to obtain the certification.
Certification will entitle a student to apply for
any position as a Competency Evaluated Nurse Aide
(CENA), Nursing Assistant (NA), Certified Nursing
Assistant (CNA), or Home Health Care Aide.
- CPR
for the Professional Rescuer-CPR is an emergency
lifesaving method used to restart the heart and lungs
and is performed when the breathing or the heartbeat
has stopped.
- First
Aide (Red Cross)-First aide has three aims, which
are to preserve life, to prevent deterioration in
a casualty's condition, and to promote recovery.
- Pharmacy
Technician Certification-Certification requires
an individual to pass the national Pharmacy Technician
Certification Examination. Pharmacy Technicians are
defined as individuals working in a pharmacy, who
under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist
in pharmacy activities not requiring the professional
judgement of a pharmacist.
- Health
Unit Coordinator Certification-This certification
indicates that an individual is able to perform a
wide variety of duties that relate to the unit operational
duties for an assigned patient care unit.
- State
Licensing Examination for Cosmetology-Students
in the cosmetology program will be preparing themselves
to take the State Licensing Examination for Cosmetology
as determined by the State of Michigan. Students may
become licensed cosmetologists in the State of Michigan
after successful completion of requirements set forth
by the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry
Services, Bureau of Commercial Services.

OSHA
CareerSafe Certification--The CareerSafe
certification program is making a valuable contribution
to the Department of Labor's efforts to prepare
young people for a safe future in the workplace.
Students will learn about their rights and responsibilities
in the workplace and gain knowledge about how they
can protect themselves and others. Areas of safety
that will be covered include: preventing falls,
personal protective equipment, bloodborne pathogens,
electrical safety, machine guarding, hazard communications,
ergonomics, prevention of workplace violence, emergeny
action, and safety philosophy.
- Personal Management and Employability Skills
Certification--This certification provides
authentic evidence of the soft skills needed for employment.
Students study topics such as: Attendance, Preparation,
Communications (including Conflict Managment), Responsibility,
and Follow Through. Students earn the certification
based on completion of the curriculum and 95% attendance.
- Michigan Certified Nurseryman Certification--Students
who study plant science and natural resources may
work toward the MCN certification, which indicates
that an individual is knowledgeable and experienced
in the Green Industry. Certification is obtained
through industry experience, examination, and commitment
to continuing education.
- Artificial Insemination Certification--Students
in the Animal Science progrram may work towards this
certification.
